Can you help me understand the golden rules of accounting?

Harold Averkamp, CPA, MBA

The golden rules of accounting are not presented in any of the U.S. accounting books that I have reviewed. I assume the reason for omitting the golden rules of accounting is that short phrases such as “debit the receiver” or “credit what goes out” or “personal accounts” are inadequate and not helpful to people such as yourself.

If you desire to gain a true and deeper understanding of debits, credits, and accounts you are likely to find our free Explanation of Debits and Credits to be very helpful. In this explanation you will also find links to our quiz questions that will give you immediate feedback on your progress. Our Visual Tutorial may also be helpful.

More than half of the 1,500 unsolicited testimonials posted on come from visitors who live outside of the U.S. The common message is that we made accounting amazingly clear.
