Should sales tax be reported based on the date that business was written or delivered?

In a retail business where customers may take possession of the goods on a future date following the initial sales transaction, should tax be reported to the government for written or delivered business? Many times the original sales order has a deposit but is not paid in full. In other cases though, the full amount of the sale may be paid in advance of the customer receiving their goods.

I suggest you check with the state in which you reside for their rules on the situation you describe. Perhaps they have a website containing the ruling in your state. Otherwise, phone or email them with your specific question.
