    I'm helping a friend who is starting a business as non-profit. I'm stuck in the volunteer work hours, travel time, and mileage, can it be recorded and if so how is it recorded/posted? Should it show as an expense or income on the financials? I will need to issue a contribution letter to the volunteers who has done volunteer work and whom has mileage and travel time as volunteer?

    Any help will help me a lot. Thanks in advance for any support towards this issue.

    If you don't pay the volunteer then there is no expense to the non-profit to record. The volunteer may be able to claim mileage for a charity on the Schedule A of his Form 1040. The volunteer cannot claim a charitable contribution for his work hours or travel time on his Form 1040.

    Does the grant require inkind or matching contributions? If so, you will need to record. Setup a Revenue account Cr;
    and an expense account Dr to track all inkind or matching requirements.
