Companies often use a factory overhead subsidiary ledger to keep track of costs of various overhead items. At the end of an accounting period, the overhead is charged to various jobs based on a predetermined overhead allocation rate, and any overapplied or underapplied overhead is closed to cost of goods sold or various inventory accounts. The balance at the end of the accounting period is zero in the factory overhead account.

Question: How are the overhead subsidiary ledgers closed ... or are they?
