I'm not an accountant, just someone who has been tasked to review the records for a client. I downloaded the quickbooks data and found they are recording all the credit card data for each of the two credit cards under accounts payable instead of listing them under the credit cards. Is this a correct way of doing this or as I'm thinking, we need to move all this data of to the credit cards register and record all transactions there?

We have two credit cards and I want to move the data unless someone can tell me something better to do.

Thanks for your help in advance

It is ok to put the credit to an account called "Accounts Payable (Credit Card). Upon settlement of the dues, Debit the Payable account and credit the bank account from which it was settled.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. They are using the credit card each day, just like you and I do to buy gas but they are buying school supplies. Do I hear you to say it is alright to do this instead of having it in a credit card code? If so, I guess I just need to make sure there are categories which I can list all the applicable expenses and everything should be alright.

Please let me know if this is what I understand you to say.

If you buy supplies using credit card, Debit Supplies a/c and credit Credit Card payable.
If you buy furniture using credit card, then debit Furniture a/c and credit Credit Card Payable and so on.......

At any given date, the balance shown in the credit card payable account will be the amout payable to bank/credit card company.
If you use more than one credit card, then maintain seperate credit card payable account to track it properly.

While settling the credit card dues, debit the respective credit card payable account.

    hope this helps

I understand what you are saying. I thought it would be a double entry but not if done properly. Don't you feel it would be beneficial to just record the proper a/c under the credit card account, pay the monthly bill from the general account or is this more of a checks and balance way of doing it?
